The Handbag Project for Women’s Month

For Women’s Day the Simon’s Town Museum staff are collecting handbags to donate to Rape Crisis in Cape Town.

Handbags are filled with personal comfort items and given to rape survivors during the initial reporting process at police stations.

We feel very strongly about the issue of rape and would appreciate any donations of UNUSED OR GOOD, SECOND-HAND HANDBAGS (not heavily worn or broken). Please ask friends, neighbours and acquaintances to assist if they are able. As you know, there has been a massive surge in gender-based violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are also appealing for the following items, as suggested by Rape Crisis:

  • Underwear (from child to adult sizes, male and female)
  • Soap / body wash
  • Facecloth
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Small non-perishable snack
  • Underwear (from child to adult sizes, male and female)
  • Sanitary towels (not tampons please)

The following items are optional extras:

  • Deodorant
  • Shampoo
  • Small notebook and pen
  • Small toy for children
  • Hairbands/comb/hairbrush
  • A note – words of comfort/care.

Bulk packs of these items can be used to supplement existing packs.

Please arrange a drop-off/pick-up from VICKY / TAZNEEM on 021 786 3046 / CATHY 065 527 4969 from 1st August 2020.

We deliver the bags to Rape Crisis in person, annually.

Deadline for donations: 31st August 2020
